A Picture is Worth a 1000 Words

The power of using effective visuals in employee communication.

In today’s fast-paced, multi media world, we have oodles of communication channels to work with – and compete with. While this makes our jobs as communicators more exciting, it can also make it more challenging to captivate our audience. Employees are bombarded with email, IMs, tweets and social media outlets – not to mention phone calls, meetings, video and print. It’s no wonder that workers have less time and shorter attention spans than ever before. They’re reading less, scanning more and hitting the delete button. So how can you grab their attention and KEEP it?

Think Visual

We live in a visual world. Employee communication isn’t really much different than advertising. Consider how you would deliver your message in a 60-second TV commercial. Powerful and entertaining visuals can help your message sing (and even dance) when done right.

Effective visuals convey information in an easy-to-digest manner and have a more lasting impression than text. As employees turn increasingly to smartphones and tablets for their day-to-day online activities, providing content that can be absorbed on the go can lead to greater awareness.

The use of infographics (also known as “data visualization”)  a cool collection of data presented as a snapshot – is catching on in employee communication. Infographics can be used as posters, in email, social media and in print. For example, instead of a wordy description of your company wellness program, consider creating a powerful graphic that displays some engaging facts and program highlights. Remember, a picture is worth 1000 words!

The infographic below lists some reasons and tips for incorporating visuals in your employee communication toolkit:
